Building renovation in practice: Challenges, solutions, and collaboration

On 10 October, UIPI will be in Milan to moderate the workshop “Building Renovation in Practice: Challenges, Solutions, and Collaboration” at Sustainable Places 2025. The session will focus on turning the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) into action, addressing both the opportunities and obstacles of Europe’s renovation wave.

The 90-minute workshop, will bring together five innovative EU-funded projects: OneClickRENO, iEPB, FACILITA, BUILDUPspeed and BARRIO. Each initiative tackles key barriers such as cost, complexity and fragmented guidance, offering practical and scalable tools to help property owners, local authorities and professionals implement the objectives set out in the EPBD.

Participants will hear how these projects contribute to raising renovation rates across Europe. OneClickRENO advances Building Renovation Passports for homeowners, while iEPB works on harmonised EPC methodologies. FACILITA supports local authorities with one-stop shops, BuildUPspeed promotes industrialised renovation methods, and BARRIO develops neighbourhood-level strategies. The session will conclude with a panel discussion to highlight synergies, common challenges and policy recommendations.

Building Renovation in Practice: Challenges, Solutions, and Collaboration forms part of the wider Sustainable Places 2025 programme, a leading annual platform for research, industry and policy stakeholders in Europe.
