Property owners ready to contribute to better neighbourhoods, new UIPI report finds
A new report by the International Union of Property Owners (UIPI) highlights the growing role property owners can play in improving the sustainability and liveability of Europe’s neighbourhoods. Based on 5,540 responses from property owners across 32 European countries, the report European property owners’ engagement in neighbourhood improvement shows that 74% of respondents believe it is part of their responsibility as property owners to contribute to the sustainability, social life and aesthetics of their neighbourhoods.
The study also reveals a solid base of engagement. Nearly 40% of property owners are already involved in activities related to improving the neighbourhood, while 44% of those not yet involved say they would be interested in participating if the right opportunities and support mechanisms are made available.
When asked about the most important aspects in their neighbourhoods, respondents highlighted safety (39%), reducing energy consumption (35%), and the use of circular and sustainable materials (30%) as top priorities.
These findings echo the ambitions of the New European Bauhaus promoted by the European Commission, which aims to combine sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion in Europe’s built environment. the report shows the potential of property owners to support this transformation at neighbourhood level.
This report complements UIPI’s broader research on property owners’ perspectives and experiences on building renovation and was developed with the support of the CrAFt project, an EU-funded initiative that works with cities and stakeholders to pilot the aims of the New European Bauhaus.
